“That which is in harmony with the universal plan must ultimately be victorious because that plan cannot be compromised and it cannot fail. There is a great motion in space by which all things, regardless of their appearances, ultimately work together in the service of the eternal good.”

“The enlightened human being no longer desires what he has not earned, and he can live happily in a growing and ever changing world. Universal justice means that the frit of his own works can never be kept from him. In exchange for relinquishing a little selfishness, he gains a new vision of eternal opportunity.
The law of rebirth protects, on a universal level, the right of every person to work, to earn, and to share. If these rights are wisely and lovingly preserved by the upright man, he can live with himself without fear and regret, and he can live with others, understanding their limitations and sharing their dreams.”

DJ Exercise MAKE A SET WITH ANOTHER PERSONS RECORDS

I was asked to be guest DJ on Dublin’s Radio Na Life recently and wondered if I could manage to subvert the experience. I decided that restricting myself to using another persons records was a way to go. The challenge threw up a lot of questions for me like how many potential ways a set can really go and which one was I going to follow, picking the opening track is always the most important thing in this regard with each record following on from it and each other.
Depending on the size of the collection I would compare it to playing someone else’s guitar. Which is something in the past I was always intrigued and sometimes shocked by. I would now be very interested in how another would respond to my collection.

The Rules

1/ Do not use records you also own.
You have to approach it very open minded as far as style goes, there would be no point in a DJ accomplished in one genre just trying to do what they normally do, I overcame this problem somewhat by not allowing myself to use any records I also had.

2/ Pick your records in 2 hours.
I picked the records like I buy them, dropping the needle on each track and within seconds deciding on gut reaction whether I liked them or not. I got through almost every record this way in 2 hours. This should be the allotted time, any longer and you start to second guess. Here’s where the second guessing comes in, as it always does anyway. You can pick as many records as you like but you will have to whittle it down to whatever the time allows. I brought about 25 records with me on the night but managed to squeeze in only 10 to my 40 minute slot.

3/ There should be no more than a week between picking and playing set.
I only had a week and didn’t think too much about it till the last day. I familiarised myself with the tracks again at home a few hours before the set but choose not to practise any mixes. Do what you like but the spirit of this enterprise should be undertaken as spontaneously as it began. My mixes went surprisingly well and I played in a markedly different style than I normally would.

The records belonged to Sarah Pachonick and were the following…

Paul Kalbrenner……… Zeit………(Bpitch Control)
Akufen …………….Psychometry 2.2 ……..(Trapez)

When we are happy we take that feeling for granted, but when unhappy times come we miss it and wish we had enjoyed it.
When we have time off we take it for granted, but when we lose that free time we miss it and wish we’d done more with it.
If we appreciate and are grateful for happiness when we experience it we are less likely to put it in jeopardy. When we have lots of free time we will use it while it lasts and have no regrets when it is gone

If we really want to develop a higher consciousness or regain our powers of intuition etc then we must leave civilisation, go somewhere to live a life that necessitates our development of these things and our continued use of them. Lets face it, how many people really want to do that? The alternative is to try to do it where we find ourselves, in a society that does not encourage or have much use for those things, where they cannot be practiced with everyday activities. There is every reason why we lost these abilities, now we want our cake and to eat it. That is the paradox, that is why it is difficult, that is why we do nothing but hark back to this state of supposed grace, rarely achieving anything of substance or permanence.
You might be surprised by this out burst but I feel its worth pointing out. The odds are stacked mightily against us achieving much. Of course the little we do is worth it. Suicide alone is reason enough to develop a more healthy, philosophical outlook on life at the very least. If the path of the artist is yours then you have a practical use to put your insights to. Outside that there is always the hope to end boredom, the eternal curse and blessing of man.
Just know it is difficult, as much to sustain it as attain it.

Hypnosis

The way our brains store information must be understood before we can truly change how it works. Some people never change their minds, they find it hard to be objective or open-minded in general. Whatever opinions or impressions they have formed, no matter how little they know about it, will automatically come to the fore once any subject or situation arises. As we grow older age will play a big part in this tendency but it is more to do with how our brains are designed to operate.
My point is, once a subject is introduced, the first reaction is to produce a memory of a previous opinion/experience in relation to it, dating from the last time the subject was considered. This automatic response is the first hurdle to over come. If we could understand how these idea’s, concepts and impressions first get lodged there and with a word can be dredged back up maybe then we would start to realise how old, uninformed and wrong they can be and start to question why we are so loyal(as they don’t really even come from us) and attached to them as we are.
We are all under some level of hypnosis, blame the media, peer pressure or an inability to change our first impressions, but if we allow it the robotic part of our brain will automatically take over.
It will be far easier then to learn, building on or discarding our previous impressions. We do not have to be defined by our opinions, we are not stuck, not robotic, unless we want to be.

Two examples of characteristics you might know.

Some never go any further than what they know, don’t want to know anything else, period, head in the sand, honest at least. Related type:Hear what they want to hear.
Another will seem to listen to an opposing view but are only acting out a charade. They might even come up with their own argument, but this is still a device to deflect the fact they are not willing to truly consider another’s conflicting view, but at least they might not be considered by others as being closed minded.

Do not strive to regain the past or model the future on previous experience. No moment lasts, but the next moment is its echo, full of the same potential, to be whatever we make of it.
