People today don't know what to do with their spare time. Work and passive activity has become the way to pass time and if they are too exhausted at the end of the day to do anything else, so much the better not to have to think of something.
Of course there never was a time in history that we were idle. Providing food and looking after the young was our essential work. Life always was a struggle but it was on our own terms and the rewards were real. Today our work is not altogether essential and what it costs us in effort does not match the reward. Life is still a struggle but no longer on our own terms as we become the victims of an escalating need.
The modern outsider is someone who decides they are too smart to be a victim anymore. They don't want to make anymore money for somebody else while chasing materialist dreams with only more debt to show for it, the only hope being a secure retirement if they play the game to the max. How they plan to spend this free time if they still have their health is open to question, never having known previously it is unlikely they will now be inspired.
Then what to do? Simply discover your talents and explore them, in time this will lead you on your way. The solution will be different for everybody. Do this in tandem with your working life or find a way to opt out and do it. We all have an individual impulse towards more life/happiness and more death/sadness. As a species we have chosen far too much of the latter, we need to leave that path and follow the one towards more life. Do it anyway you can, do it for your own sake.
